A contemporary romantic comedy about the universal qust for that one tru love. All Over the Guy centers on an unlikely pair of two twenty-somethings, Eli (Dan Bucatinsky) and Tom (Richard Ruccolo), who are thrown together by their respective best friends. They’re both looking for ‘the one,’ but don’t recognize it when they find it. Cary Grant and Sophia Loren look just swell together in Houseboat, and why shouldn’t they? Grant was still at his best, Loren was bewitching Hollywood as an exotic new ingenu, and offscreen they had had a torrid affair a couple of years earlier, during the shooting of The Pride and the Passion. The two tanned stars are the main attraction in this romantic comedy, which installs single dad Cary and his three children on a dilapidated houseboat on the Potomac River. Sophia is the maid, except she’s not really a maid but the cultured daughter of a famous musician. Yes, this is one of those situation comedies in which every problem could be cleared up if only one character told the truth about the situation. If that sort of thing drives you crazy, best skip this one. It’s no classic, but those two icons are awfully appealing. –Robert Horton

In Mike Barker’s version of British history, Thomas Fairfax (Mission Impossible II’s Dougray Scott) represents reason, while Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth, taking on a role previously assumed by Richard Harris) embodies reform. As the lieutenant-general, who makes up in conviction what he lacks in charisma, declares, “Tom is our emblem. We are brutes without him.” He could easily be referring to himself, since Cromwell would turn out to be one of England’s more brutal reformers. Barker picks up their story in 1645 during the height of civil war. At the time, King Charles I (Rupert Everett, in fine fettle despite a few unfortunate ensembles) holds a tenuous grasp on the throne. Parliamentarians Fairfax and Cromwell enjoy cordial relations; though the latter’s increasing fanaticism bodes poorly for the future. Further, the lord general’s wife, Lady Fairfax (Rushmore’s Olivia Williams), sympathizes with the king, putting her husband in an awkward position. In the end, Cromwell will decide the fate of the Crown, but many lives might have been spared if Parliament had heeded Fairfax’s calls for leniency. Plagud by budgetary problems, Barker was forced to halt production on the film twice (the project was saved largely by actor/producer Scott, who paid crew members out of his own pocket). Consequntly, the director opted to emphasize political intrigu over battlefield heroics. Though less satisfying than his underrated Oscar Wilde adaptation A Good Woman, To Kill a King (formerly Cromwell and Fairfax) features convincing performances and raises timely qustions about the qualifications for leadership. –Kathleen C. On May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame.
